Cayman Islands National Museum

The Cayman Islands National Museum is dedicated to the preservation, research and dissemination of all aspects of the Caymanian heritage. After years of planning, artifacts conservation and exhibit design, the Cayman Islands National Museum opened to the public in 1990 in the Old Courts Building. The museum was closed for restoration following Hurrican Ivan in 2004 and re-opened in 2009.

The museum can trace its roots to the 1930's when Mr. Ira Thompson began collecting Caymanian artifacts as a hobby. In 1979, the government purchased the collection which became the nucleus of the museum collection. Today, the museum collection contains over 8,000 items ranging from tiny coins to a 14ft catboat to natural history specimens and rare documents.

Established as a place of learning and enjoyment, the museum prorovides residents and visitors with a rich understanding of the Cayman heritage throught its exhibits and special activities.
